AJSO Concern Regarding Arbitrary Arrests of Journalists in Afghanistan

Regrettably, Radio Azadi journalist Habibur Rahman Taseer has been detained by provincial authorities in Ghazni Province for several days and has now been transferred to prison.

While the reason for Mr. Taseer’s arrest remains unknown, the pattern of arrests by the current authorities over the past two years, particularly in recent months, raises serious concerns. Numerous journalists have been detained without clear justification during this time.

In condemning these illegal and unjustified arrests, we strongly urge authorities to uphold the freedom of expression and release Mr. Taseer and all imprisoned journalists without conditions.

Afghanistan Journalists Support Organization calls upon international institutions and human rights organizations to amplify their voices and take concrete actions to secure the release of all imprisoned journalists.

Journalists and media activists in Afghanistan face significant threats and vulnerabilities, surpassing those encountered in other regions of the world. They lack independence, freedom of expression, economic support, and the ability to inform the public. Daily, they contend with censorship and restrictions, risking Afghanistan becoming a dark area devoid of freedom of expression and access to information.

We remain committed to advocating for the support of all imprisoned and censored journalists. We will diligently monitor their legal status and continue our efforts until the release of all our colleagues.
